Breaking Free from the Scroll

A Psychotherapist's Guide to Device Addiction

Is your phone the first thing you touch in the morning and the last thing you see at night?

You’re in a meeting but distracted, wondering what your phone was just buzzing about.

You grab your device whenever you feel something.
Lonely, anxious, or bored.
At stop lights, checkout lines, and in the bathroom.

You tell yourself “just five more minutes” and emerge an hour later, feeling drained and guilty.

You know you should cut back, but the pull is stronger than your “willpower.”

It feels like a personal failing, but it’s not—it’s by design.

Tech companies have teams of engineers devoted to making our devices as addictive as possible, exploiting the same brain mechanisms that make us vulnerable to slot machines, drugs, porn, and chocolate.

But once you understand those mechanisms, you can take back control.

Come participate in a judgment-free look at your relationship with technology and build a healthier path forward.

Together We'll Explore

1. The Reality of Tech Addiction

Recognize the signs beyond screen time: compulsive checking, distress when separated from devices, using tech to avoid feelings, and the erosion of presence and deep thought in your own life.

2. Why It Matters

Understand the impacts on sleep, focus, anxiety, relationships, and the ability to be fully present—backed by research on what’s actually happening to your brain and body.

3. The Real  Role of Dopamine

Learn about the science of how variable rewards, infinite scroll, and push notifications create patterns that mirror addiction. Why “just trying harder” is doomed to fail and misses the point entirely.

4. Tools for Change

Leave with practical, compassionate strategies: healthy, in-the-moment alternatives when the urge hits, boundaries that respect your actual needs, and a realistic plan for change that avoids the pitfalls of perfectionism.
